These are some of my initial ideas for cover designs, based on the imagery I thought related well to sections of the story of Alice in Wonderland. I have also Experimented with some spot colours, the layout and compositional elements within the designs. I would use a similar layout for each book cover to keep the collectable, group feel this gives them.
Alice In Wonderland - Book Cover Design - draft ideas
The following designs are draft ideas for book covers/dust jackets that could work together. I want to keep an iconic image from the book as I think this will help the onlooker to recognise the story, but in a subtle way.
Below is an example of my first layout idea on the mac, along with a layout for the body copy on the back of the book. I think the centralised text doesn't work and the font size is too big, plus the logo is way too close to the barcode.

Alice In Wonderland - Book Cover Design - Mock Paper Design
This is a mock design idea for one of the book cover tops (that will have a floral/fungus theme) I created the design by hand, drawing, using inspiration from library books which you can see here.

Alice In Wonderland - Book Cover Design - Sketch Development
Sketch development - this style of silhouette design is what I want to use for all my book cover designs, on top of the covers, utilising different iconic imagery while keeping the same style.

Alice In Wonderland - Book Cover Design - Typography
These are my initial typography choices for the title of the book, I have decided that a plain but appealing font is appropriate for a children's audience (for legibility) and a more delicate, organic, calligraphic font works well for a more mature audience (who might collect books for their covers and their imagery/typography.

Alice in Wonderland - Book CoverDesign - Initial Sketches
These are some of the initial sketches I have produced for the Alice in Wonderland book cover design for a competition brief. I am in the process of playing with floral and mushroom silhouette illustrations that I found in an old book in the library. You can also see the start of a mock design for a papercut. I decided to focus on the part of the story with the singing flowers as a reference and thought it provided some great visual imagery. These will then be developed into a series of book covers using different visual imagery at the top of each cover and a focal point of them on the cover.

planning and preparation
I have finally typed up all my briefs, printed out all the weekly and daily timetables, planned all my research for each brief and outlined my initial ideas using brainstorms for each project. I am definitely learning from my mistakes of last year by only focusing on five briefs, that I know I will be able to fully explore, instead of only just managing to complete designs and final products for seven briefs, as I did in the last module. I have chosen briefs that I want to experiment with and develop a range of ideas for, instead of just creating one idea and sticking with it because I have no time to explore other ideas due to time constraints. This year I am focusing on paper and technique to create ideas and concepts for promotion and advertising as I think my skills using handmade designs and papercut artwork will lend themselves well to create promotional and advertising designs. I want to use paper cuts and paper engineering to illustrate and create visuals to be used for advertising of high end products or to promote luxury retail brands/products.

This blog will be a place for inspirational design that I find which influences my practice and that is of similar aesthetic to what I aim to design myself. I will also post work that I have created for my chosen briefs.
